McCarthy, an experienced civil litigation attorney with an impeccable record in successfully representing individuals, small businesses and corporations over the last 30 years. During his nearly 20 year tenure at a large, prestigious firm in Portland, Oregon, Stephen represented parties to commercial disputes and litigation, policyholders and insurers with insurance coverage matters, personal injury litigation, creditors rights, construction contractors services, probate, and estate and trust litigation. While still working with clients in need of business and personal representation, it is because of his passion for helping those dealing with guardianship, conservatorship, incapacity issues, and probate that led Stephen to open his own law firm. After acting as a caregiver for a terminally-ill loved one, facing personal tragedy, and being on the client-side of difficult situations and decisions, Stephen found his calling: an obligation to empower people with the information they need to make the best decisions for loved ones who are unable to make choices for themselves. McCarthy Law Firm was established so other people can benefit from not only Stephens significant legal knowledge, training and experience but also the empathy and understanding that only those who have been faced with a loved one who has a chronic illness, becomes incapacitated and is facing death can have. One of the primary purposes of the McCarthy Law Firm is to be a caring, empathetic advocate who guides, assists, advises, and puts in place legal tools that will allow family members to do what their loved one cannot do for themselves, while protecting family members from the hardship, financial stress and grief that can occur when those tools are not in place. If disagreements or legal disputes among family members arise after a loved one has passed, Stephen has direct personal and professional experience - as a personal representative, a law firm client and a mediator - to help resolve those emotional issues, while trying to preserve family relationships. In all areas of practice, it is the goal of McCarthy Law Firm to work with clients to make complicated situations and decisions as simple as possible.
