Brian Andrews is a partner focusing his practice in the firms Healthcare Law and Medical Malpractice teams. Mr. Andrews obtained his bachelors degree from Binghamton University in 2006 and worked as a paralegal in the Narcotic Trials Bureau of the Queens County District Attorneys Office prior to attending law school. He earned his Juris Doctorate from St Johns University School of Law in 2011, where he graduated cum laude, was an editor for the Journal of International and Comparative Law, studied abroad in Rome, and held a judicial clerkship internship with the Honorable Denis R. Hurley of the United States District Court, Eastern District of New York. He is licensed to practice in the State of New York. Brian earned international acclaim in the highly competitive VIS International Commercial Arbitration Moot in Vienna where his teams performance is the best moot court performance in the history of St. Johns Law. His team placed 3rd in a field of 260 law schools from 65 countries and he earned additional recognition as one of the top Individual Oralists in the entire competition. Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Andrews spent over a decade working in Risk Management as the Claims Manager and Deputy Privacy Officer for a prominent integrated health care system comprising all spectra of care from hospitals, nursing homes, home care, and hospice to physician practices and group homes for the developmentally disabled. He managed the systems professional liability, general liability, cyber, property, and auto claims from inception to resolution and worked closely with primary and excess carriers, defense counsel, brokers, actuaries, third party administrators, risk retention groups, captive managers and external auditors. He assisted in all aspects of the systems insurance renewals, the budget for which exceeded $100 M/year. He has extensive experience managing claims from an excess perspective and utilizing Captive insurance companies to devise risk financing solutions to minimize the exposure of litigation. Additionally, Mr. Andrews managed the systems privacy compliance program. He oversaw the investigations of the systems HIPAA incidents, coordinated the breach responses, and implemented corrective actions. He delivered ongoing privacy training for new and existing employees and developed the system-wide privacy policies. He frequently collaborated with IT Security, HIM, electronic medical record systems, patient portals, health information exchanges and business associates to manage the ever increasing risks to ePHI from external threat actors. He also implemented a proactive EMR monitoring system to detect unauthorized access and insider threats.
