His practice runs the gamut from business disputes and matters on behalf of government entities to personal injury appeals. Hes represented notable companies, including a prominent industrial conglomerate in long-running multidistrict litigation and a Fortune 50 retailer in breach of warranty cases. Matthew volunteers with the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyer Foundation, the largest provider of pro bono legal services to low-income Atlantans seeking safe and stable housing and fair pay, and serves on its Leadership Council. He is also active with the Federal Bar Associations Young Lawyers Division. Before joining the firm, Matthew served as a law clerk to Judge Beverly B. Martin, U. S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, and to Judge Robert L. Hinkle, U. S. District Court for the Northern District of Florida. Outside the office Matthew is a member of Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus, rehearsing weekly with the group and performing several times a year. He received his Juris Doctor from Stanford Law School, his Masters in Modern Literature, with distinction, from Wolfson College, University of Oxford, and his Bachelor of Arts in English, summa cum laude, from the University of Georgia. Representative Work Regularly defends the City of Atlanta in Open Records Act, Open Meetings Act, and First Amendment litigation, including successful defense of the City of Atlanta against constitutional claims by the Buckhead City Coalition. Recovered millions for a high networth individual in accounting malpractice dispute, including spearheading expert and fact discovery. Successfully arbitrated a complex business dispute for a minority LLC member, resulting in a $2.6 million award. Secured remand of hundreds of cases involving civilian users of defective earplugs to state court and defended the order on appeal to the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. Regularly defends a major electronics company in product liability and breach of warranty cases. Successfully orally argued in the Georgia Court of Appeals, leading to a published opinion on Georgias ante litem notice statute. Obtained affirmance of an order declaring hospital authority property tax-exempt in the Georgia Court of Appeals. Representing a prominent industrial conglomerate in a long-running multidistrict litigation. Defeated dismissal of RICO and securities fraud claims by persuading a federal court that a cryptocurrency qualified as a security. REPRESENTATIVE PRO BONO WORK Secured asylum for two Afghan refugees who fled after the U. S. withdrawal, allowing them to resettle permanently in Atlanta. Obtained jurisdictional maximum verdict in magistrate court trial of fraud and unfair business practices claims against a used car dealer.
