Hon. Tanya R. Kennedy

Tanya Kennedy is a distinguished judge serving on the New York Supreme Court Appellate Division, 1st Department, a position she has held since her appointment in 2020. She also serves as a judge of the New York Supreme Court, 1st Judicial District, with a term that extends to January 1, 2030. Prior to her appellate service, Kennedy was a judge on the New York City Civil Court from 2006 to 2015. She earned her Bachelor of Arts from Pennsylvania State University in 1989 and her Juris Doctor from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law in 1992. Kennedy’s legal career began in 1992 as an assistant corporation counsel in the Office of the Corporation Counsel for the New York City Law Department, where she later served as deputy assistant chief. She then became the principal law clerk for State Supreme Court Justice Barry Cozier, a role she continued when Justice Cozier was promoted to the Appellate Division. Kennedy’s judicial career has been marked by her election to the Civil Court in 2006, her unopposed election to the Supreme Court, 1st Judicial District in 2015, and her subsequent appointment to the Appellate Division in 2020.
