<b>James G. Martin</b> is a judge for the <a href="/Twenty-First_Circuit_Court,_Tennessee" title="Twenty-First Circuit Court, Tennessee">Twenty-First Circuit Court</a>. The court presides over <a href="/Hickman_County,_Tennessee_(Judicial)" title="Hickman County, Tennessee (Judicial)">Hickman</a>, <a href="/Lewis_County,_Tennessee_(Judicial)" title="Lewis County, Tennessee (Judicial)">Lewis</a>, <a href="/Perry_County,_Tennessee_(Judicial)" title="Perry County, Tennessee (Judicial)">Perry</a>, and <a href="/Williamson_County,_Tennessee_(Judicial)" title="Williamson County, Tennessee (Judicial)">Williamson</a> counties in <a href="/Tennessee" title="Tennessee">Tennessee</a>. He was appointed by Governor <a href="/Phil_Bredesen" title="Phil Bredesen">Phil Bredesen</a> on <a href="/C2008#November" class="mw-redirect" title="C2008">November 11, 2008</a>, to replace retired Judge R.E. Lee Davies.<sup id="cite_ref-appointment_1-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-appointment-1">[1]</a></sup> Martin assumed office on January 1, 2009, and was elected to the court in November 2010 and re-elected on August 7, 2014. <p>Martin received his undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University in 1969 and his <a href="/J.D." class="mw-redirect" title="J.D.">J.D.</a> degree from the Vanderbilt Law School in 1974, where he graduated at the top of his class.<sup id="cite_ref-appointment_1-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-appointment-1">[1]</a></sup><sup id="cite_ref-bio_7-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-bio-7">[7]</a></sup>
</p>
<h2><span class="mw-headline" id="Career">Career</span></h2>
<p>Martin began his career as an assistant city attorney for Franklin, <a href="/Tennessee" title="Tennessee">Tennessee</a>. He was promoted to city attorney in 1976 and served in that position until 1988. He also was a partner at the law firm of <i>Farris Warfield &amp; Kanaday</i> from 1978 to 2000. That firm then merged with <i>Stites &amp; Harbison</i>, where Martin continued to work as a partner until his judicial appointment in 2008.<sup id="cite_ref-appointment_1-2" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-appointment-1">[1]</a></sup>
