Hon. Trevor N. Stephens

Trevor N. Stephens has served as the presiding superior court judge of Alaska’s First Judicial District in Ketchikan since his appointment in 2000. A Willamette University alumnus, Stephens earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and political science in 1982 and a J.D. from Willamette University College of Law in 1985, where he was an associate editor of the Law Review and graduated in the top 20% of his class. Prior to his judgeship, he held a variety of legal positions in Alaska, including Assistant Public Defender in Anchorage, associate and partner roles at the Ziegler Firm in Ketchikan, and Assistant District Attorney and District Attorney in the State of Alaska’s District Attorney’s Office in Ketchikan. He also worked briefly for Faulkner Banfield, PC in Ketchikan. Throughout his career, Stephens has focused on criminal law, public defense, and general counsel work. He has been retained by voters in 2004, 2010, and 2016, and was named presiding judge for the 2013 calendar year by Chief Justice Dana Fabe. Outside the courtroom, Stephens has served as board president of the Ketchikan Area Arts and Humanities Council, participated in the Area State Parks Advisory Board, the Ketchikan Chamber of Commerce, and the First City Rotary, and has supported Amnesty International and local NPR station KRBD. He also coaches little league and has served on the board of St. John’s Episcopal Church.
