Melbye earned his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Minnesota in 1992 and his Juris Doctor from Hamline University School of Law in 1995. Prior to his judgeship, he served as a law clerk for the Ninth Judicial District from 1995 to 1996 and again from 2002 to 2006. In the 2012 election, he secured re-election by defeating challenger Diana Sweeney with 59.29% of the vote.
