Paul John Kennedy

Paul J. Kennedy is known throughout New Mexico for his extensive work in civil litigation and criminal defense, focusing on civil rights, wrongful death, white-collar criminal defense, and appellate litigation. His thorough understanding of the law and exemplary practice have led to his appointment as a Justice on the New Mexico Supreme Court twice, under Governors Gary Johnson and Susana Martinez. His reputation for extensive legal knowledge and experience precedes him, especially in trial litigation, and he is recognized in legal circles throughout the state for his in-depth understanding of the law and his ability to successfully fight for his clients. Because of that reputation, he is often called upon to serve as special counsel for government entities, including the State Legislature and the New Mexico Supreme Court. Mr. Kennedy has an extensive background in civil rights litigation and criminal defense, and he is known as an experienced trial and appellate lawyer. He began his career as a state public defender in Albuquerque and also worked as a federal public defender. Mr. Kennedy is a graduate of the Georgetown University Law Center, where he attended as a Fulbright Scholar. He served on active duty in the United States Marine Corps from 1971 to 1973. He has practiced full-time in New Mexico since 1976. His facility in the Spanish language has enabled him to be of particular service to the Spanish-speaking community over the years.
