R. Clay Mathews

Clay is a founding and managing shareholder of Smolker Mathews, P. A. Clay has a diverse background in handling real property and land use matters all over the state of Florida. He has extensive litigation experience in state and federal courts where he has obtained successful results in complex property rights, inverse condemnation, land use, environmental and general commercial litigation cases. He also has experience in various land use matters including rezonings, comprehensive plan amendments, variances, special exceptions, conditional uses and various types of local government applications for land use and development. Clay has been named to Florida Trends Legal Elite and also been named a Rising Star by Florida Super Lawyers. A Tampa native, Clay attended the University of Florida where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Finance, Master of Arts in International Business and Juris Doctor. Prior to law school, Clay was inducted into the University of Florida Hall of Fame and was a member of Florida Blue Key, Floridas oldest and most prestigious leadership honorary. After his tenure at the University of Florida, Clay moved back to his hometown of Tampa. Since moving back, he has played an active role in the community. Clay currently serves as the Chair of Tampas local chapter of After-School All-Stars, a national organization which provides after-school programs for Title I schools in underprivileged areas. He is also a member of the William Reece Smith, Jr. Litigation Inn of Court and graduate of Tampa Connection. Clay enjoys spending time with his wife, Marisa, and daughter, Madeline, and his family and friends, going to Gator football games, visiting Boca Grande, running, fishing and playing golf.
