At that time, I was too thin and asthmatic to excel at sports, so I directed my competitiveness towards winning arguments, and in figuring out how to persuade others. I became an employee at fifteen and worked a steady series of jobs bagging groceries, running cash registers, cleaning bathrooms, delivering newspapers, folding towels, fighting forest fires, and moving furniture. By the time I started law school I wanted to be an employee rights lawyer: I had seen too much workplace injustice. I have never been able to tolerate powerful people who use their power to take advantage of those with less. Unfortunately, this happens all too frequently in our workplaces. We all know stories about workers who were fired illegally. Who were denied wages that they earned. Who were sexually harassed by their supervisors. Who were terminated when they got too old, too sick or because they got pregnant. Many of us have experienced this oppression firsthand. I made it my business to settle these scores on behalf of the victims - to bully the bullies.
